Astros, HCHSA & Houston First partner to bring the World Baseball Classic to town

HOUSTON, TX – Major League Baseball announced on Thursday that Houston, Texas has been selected as one of the host cities for the highly anticipated 2026 World Baseball Classic. It will be the first time Houston will host the prestigious international baseball event. 

“We are thrilled for Houston to have been chosen to host the World Baseball Classic,” said J. Kent Friedman, HCHSA Chairman of the Board. “When coupled with the FIFA World Cup, 2026 will demonstrate once again why Houston is one of the great sports cities not just in the U.S., but in the world. The thousands of fans that will be here for the WBC to cheer on their favorite country will have an incredible economic impact on the area and the Harris County – Houston Sports Authority is very pleased to welcome all of them to Minute Maid Park.”

The Houston Astros, Harris County – Houston Sports Authority (HCHSA) and Houston First Corporation have been partners throughout the selection process. Today marks the culmination of significant hard work and dedication put into securing the bid. The World Baseball Classic showcases the best baseball talent from around the globe and features current MLB stars playing for their home countries. Houston is one of four cities that is playing host alongside Tokyo, Japan, San Juan, Puerto Rico and Miami, Florida.

Minute Maid Park will be the 9th Major League ballpark to host the event which started back in 2006. “I am excited about Houston hosting the World Baseball Classic. Having the teams and visitors in town will not just showcase Houston’s passion for the sport but also celebrate the diverse cultures from around the globe that unite under one love for the game,” said Houston Mayor John Whitmire. “As the nation’s most diverse city, home to a truly global community, we are eager to demonstrate the unique experience Houston offers our domestic and international visitors. I appreciate all the people and organizations that came together to secure this event for Houston.” 

The World Baseball Classic will not only bring thrilling baseball action to Houston, but it will also have a significant economic impact on the city, especially the downtown area which will see a huge number of fans from across the world come to watch their country play in one of the best ballparks in the country.

2026 will be a huge international year for the city, with the 2026 FIFA World Cup also taking place during the summer. As Houston prepares to welcome the world in 2026, the city is poised to demonstrate itself as one of the best sports cities in the nation.
